After-Care Instructions
After Care Instructions
Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may vary from slightly tender to very tender for several days and up to a week as a result of manipulation during treatment and previous condition of your tooth. This tenderness is normal and no cause for alarm. Do not chew hard foods on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed and your tooth is covered with a protective restoration provided by your restorative dentist. You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen. Discomfort may be alleviated by taking Ibuprofen (Advil) up to 600mg every 4-6 hours and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 500mg as directed. In certain circumstances, antibiotics may be prescribed. It is important that you inform your treating doctor of any allergies.
Note: Alcohol intake is not advised while taking any of these medications. Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above listed medications, or should swelling develop, please contact the office at 843-654-1410.
After Completion of Endodontic Treatment
Once endodontic treatment has been completed the root canal system has been permanently sealed; however, the outer surface is sealed with a temporary restoration. A follow-up restoration must be placed to protect your tooth from fracture and decay. Please make an appointment within the following month with your restorative dentist.
Your tooth may be prone to fracture following endodontic treatment and it is advised that you follow up with your restorative dentist for a final restoration within 2-3 weeks of completion of endodontic therapy.
